STANISLAVSKI 4 CHEKHOV is a very intensive BOOT CAMP in which we will teach you acting for modern, realistic drama and comedy for live (theatre) and recorded (film and TV) utilizing the technique developed by Stanislavski, his colleagues and his successors, applied to the work of two seminal authors: the Russian Anton Chekhov and the British Harold Pinter.

Stanislavski’s famous technique developed in forced marches to suit the psychological complexities of Chekhov’s innovative playwriting. Chekhov is the single most important influence on the work of modern writers for film and theatre including Woody Allen, Ingmar Bergman and Tom Stoppard.

Harold Pinter, CH, CBE (10 October 1930 – 24 December 2008), was an English playwright, screenwriter, actor, theatre director, political activist and poet. He was among the most influential British playwrights of modern times. In 2005, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Without Harold Pinter we might not have had the fantastic work of Mike Leigh or even Ricky Gervais’ The Office.

Pinter, in terms of acting technique, is the next step up the ladder towards perfection after Chekhov. Both present characters spiraling downward into life-in-death, bursting with love & sex (unrequited or otherwise) or rebelling against their dull surroundings.

However, whereas Chekhov’s characters explode in disparate speeches often incoherent, Pinter’s characters keep a tight lid on their simmering inner processes therefore very few and very incomplete phrases are often the only speech that floats to the surface.

An actor who can play both these authors can play any comedy or drama in modern and contemporary film, theatre, radio and television.

The technique we will teach you at ASN is based on no-nonsense, Active Script Analysis and a dynamic, psychologically thorough understanding of Stage Action. This technique will enable you to tackle the most psychologically complex and emotionally demanding roles in contemporary drama.

In this course, we will teach you how to apply this technique using challenging soliloquies and scenes from Chekhov’s and Pinter’s plays endowing you with knowledge that few people in this country possess.
