“A Russian critic once observed that Russians treat Shakespeare as their own classic and stage him accordingly. It is therefore not surprising that any given month one can find a dozen Shakespearean productions in St. Petersburg and at least twice as many in Moscow. This number is greater than all Chekhov productions (including all short-story adaptations) combined, with Ostrovskiy coming in a distant third.”

Vitaliy Eyber

University of California at Berkeley

Many people believe that Stanislavski technique can only be used for acting in realistic drama (A Chekhov, T Williams, A Miller, etc). However, during Stanislavski’s lifetime alone, his theatre produced Othello, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar and more. Stanislavski’s successors, directors like Efros, Tairov, Tovstonogov and Sturua, have had their Shakespearean productions tour the world and been praised profusely by the international press.

Russia has a tradition in Shakespeare performance which starts long before Stanislavski, during the time of Peter the Great; The Empress Catherine the Great herself translated some of the Bard’s works and in the twentieth and twenty-first century, Russian film adaptations of Shakespeare, which in number are only rivalled by Great Britain’s, have received countless international prices.

Stanislavski’s theatres’ productions of pieces with larger-than-life character’s such as Gogol’s (The Inspector General; Dead Souls) or Dickens’ (Cricket in the Hearth; The Battle of Life) are as famous as its productions of classic comedy and drama written in verse by authors such as Moliere (Tartuffe), Goldoni (Mistress of the Inn) Beaumarchais (The Marriage of Figaro) and Russia’s very own Pushkin (Boris Godunov, Don Juan, Mozart & Salieri). Finally, there is Stanislavski’s trendsetting work in Opera and Ballet done at his famous Studio which is now a renowned Opera & Ballet theatre.

From Stanislavski and his successors evolved a technique for acting texts written in verse that allows the actor to underpin heightened language with psychological justification, making it sound modern and natural whilst following verse patterns strictly. This clever approach also allows the actor to break down Action in a way whereby scenes can be played to the highest level of dramatic intensity making them even more exciting to modern audiences.

In this course, we will teach you how to apply this technique using challenging soliloquies and scenes from Shakespeare’s plays endowing you with knowledge that few people in this country possess. This technique will enable you to confidently approach any type of comedy or drama written in verse.
